One-stop-shop for goods & personal mobility
(2022-2022) The goal of the project has been to develop new business models and policies for shared and sustainable mobility in the borderland between the real estate and transport industry to avoid waste and inefficiency, both ecologically and financially.
The societal goals of sustainable change do not go hand in hand with policies, business models or spatial planning. Today, new production of parking garages under or above ground in municipalities close to bigger cities is a pure loss-making business, for the environment and the property owner. This is well known, yet the waste of resources continues. They are built mainly because the municipalities' parking number requires it in connection with the preparation of new detailed development plans.
To accelerate the transition to sustainable transports of goods and passenger mobility in cities, we need to test and scale up completely new business models based on the elimination of "waste". Together with the city of Kungsbacka, Aranäs properties and Okidoki architects, Urbanivation have tested new solutions in Kungsbacka, one of Sweden's fastest growing cities, located south of Gothenburg.
By prototyping new business models within both existing detailed development plans and in new citys districts, the project team wanted to challenge norms and processes to bring out a faster and greener transition. The project wanted to clarify roles and path choices that exist for both property owners and the city and offer solutions that can be repeated in similar situations.
The result goal is to develop business model prototypes for one-stop shops for goods and passenger mobility in collaboration between property owners and cities and with input from users, as well as to identify obstacles and opportunities for them. The project's objectives have been to:
- development of models and ways to impact policies for shared parking numbers within and between detailed development plans
- new business models for value-sharing of profits arising from shared parking
- programs and content for user-centric mobility hubs in new production
- concept for reprogramming existing car park to mobility property
The project has worked in an agile process inspired by Steve Blank's customer development process and Design-thinking where they have combined design, finance and implementation and validated by agreeing with users and project stakeholders. To ensure that the business model contains all parts, they have used and presented it in according tol Alexander Osterwalder's Business Model Canvas. To analyze policies, the project have used the OECD's BASIC framework. The work steps included: business environment analysis, early and continuous involvement and the development of a business model & program.
In January 2023, One-stop-shop arranged an event to gather stakeholders and presented their conclusions. In this short film, they share some of their thoughts on the project. (In Swedish)
"We cannot afford to waste either land, the environment or money in the way that is done today. With the One-stop shop model, property owners and cities can take part of practical solutions and a process for finding common paths that contribute to changing to sustainable goods management and more flexible mobility in the cities", commented project manager Adetoun Ayoade.
