Delta

DELTA was a pilot for on demand-controlled public transport with smaller vehicles aimed at studying and changing people's behavioral patterns around shared vehicles.

Delta was a project with a behavioral focus linked to on-demand mobility in public transport that aimed to make mobility social and introduce people in Kista to the possibility of sharing the journey. The project addressed community and traveler challenges, sustainable travel for eco-friendly cities and expanded public transport services without pollution and congestion. This was done through two selected focuses: user experience and integration to public transport.

The project would implement and test services in order to offer a sustainable and attractive alternative to private travel with your own car to and from the Kista area. Prerequisites identified to get there included, among others, environmentally friendly vehicles, shared travel, a quest for sustainable costs and a service adapted to the traveler's needs – being able to travel when and where they needed it. Therefore, the project implemented and evaluated a solution for so-called ride sharing, with trips that could be booked on demand. To enable future implementation of the service, the project also developed possible business models.

The focus groups that participated had to travel with the service, participate in workshops and answer questionnaires about on demand and whether one could imagine using the service also with driverless vehicles. The trips were booked via an app on the traveler's mobile and were carried out by two electric mopeds with professional drivers from Keolis. The mopeds were also equipped with units connected to a control tower and an integration between this and parts of Keoli's fleet was created to make buses visible in the control tower for a presumptive traffic management. Finally, a workshop was held with stakeholders, such as Region Stockholm and the city of Stockholm, about the results and thoughts about the future.

Due to the pandemic, the project adapted the scope and removed the delivery around shared travel.

Selection of results

  • The lessons learned from the users included that:
  • Users were satisfied and wanted the service to continue
  • The app for booking should be developed to meet the needs of the traveler
  • Travelers were hesitant to pay for the service, but could consider it if it was cheaper than taxis or included in public transport
  • Travelers were open to using the service even if the journey was shared with others and it was carried out by self-driving vehicles. However, they highlighted that the drivers provided a sense of security.

The knowledge will be used for further development of mobility solutions for a sustainable future.
