Autonomous Site - Confined Autonomous Solution test and validation

Volvo's goal was to validate L4 machines and communication in order to create increased knowledge about what needs to be improved. RISE's goals were the collection of machine data, the development and analysis of machine models based on operational data in a real environment. The models demonstrated significance for optimizing productivity and uptime. Telia's goal was to assist with network capacity for the tests to be carried out, data from the tests and competence in data communication issues. Ericsson's goals included remote management, telemetry data management and a Digital twin.

Results and expected effects

Testing of the system in a real customer environment and test environment resulted in lessons learned, insights into the system's maturity and areas for improvement. The testing in Hofors showed that it is possible, within a relatively short time, to introduce a fully autonomous transport solution in a real production environment at a customer's. Improvements to meet customer requirements for availability, upscaling and commercialization. The result indicates high potential for optimization with digital twins based on machine data. The project indicates a value in comparing and coordinating the network's capacity across the line.

Layout and implementation

The project had regular reconciliation meetings every two weeks to reconcile status, which proved to be extra good during the pandemic to create momentum and exchange of results and planning for continued work. We did tests and analysis on autonomous machines in a real test track where we installed the infrastructure to test and validate the function, the communication between vehicle and infrastructure. The data used came from actual customer data which was then analyzed. A final demonstration is planned.
