Methods and measures for evaluating an automated transport system

(2016-2017) The automation of the transport system can bring great benefits, such as increased safety, improved efficiency, less environmental impact, improved accessibility and convenience. In order to evaluate and manage these initiatives so that they benefit society in general, measurement methods are needed that are capable of evaluating the transport system from several different perspectives.

In the feasibility study project "Methods and measures for evaluating the impact of the automated transport system on society", researchers from Viktoria Swedish ICT, Autoliv, Sweco, the Swedish Transport Administration and VTI are now collaborating to identify how the benefits of automation can be evaluated.

The goal is to develop a systematic working method for choosing which measurement methods and measures should be used when evaluating eg. a development project or investment in society. Instead of taking into account only one-dimensional measures (such as effects on congestion, traffic accidents in specific areas, or socio-economic benefits), measures that examine automation effects at several different levels, such as physical, psychological, organizational and political, are included.

The basis of the project is the socio-technical analysis framework "Human-Tech Ladder" by Vicente, 2010. A multidimensional perspective of the transport system as a sociotechnical system creates better conditions for evaluating and controlling how the automation of the transport system can be designed in such a secure and efficient way as possible.

The project is being carried out within the framework of Drive Sweden and the preliminary study will be completed in May 2017.
