Transformation Map for enabling deployment of autonomous driving in Sweden

Automated vehicles can, if used correctly, be of great benefit to the transport system, but for Sweden to become attractive for the implementation of the technology, clarity and predictability are needed. Therefore, the Swedish Transport Agency has initiated work on a transformation map where, together with various stakeholders, a national goal and action plan are developed.

Purpose and goals

Develop and communicate a holistic view within a very complex and fast-moving area where many actors' perspectives and initiatives are crucial and few have a holistic view and sufficient knowledge to dare/be able to act. This project aims to gather different perspectives and skills and make visible what needs to be prioritized while the process itself builds and broadens/deepens knowledge among the actors who participate.

Expected effects and results

Develop and make visible a holistic view and change journey in the form of a transformation map. Provide a basis for starting initiatives on urgent issues in order to be able to implement in an effective manner/in the right order. Structure and prioritize regulatory issues in a Swedish context at the same time as harmonization within the EU and the UN takes place. Set concrete and realistic goals for a gradual introduction in Sweden that gives commercial actors the security to take business risks.

Planned structure and implementation

The project begins with the method being tested for the area of “Shared passenger transport” where the method is tested and then simplified and refined for the area of “Heavy transport”. The work is carried out by collecting prioritized needs to enable autonomous driving in Sweden from different perspectives. These are then discussed and prioritized and laid out over time. The most important initiatives are collected and illustrated in a Transformation Map.
