STIG - Smart Technology for Innovative data collection and analysis for pedestrian and cycle paths

The pedestrian and cycle path network is crucial for sustainable travel, but many municipalities struggle to effectively identify maintenance needs.

Background

The pedestrian and cycle path network is crucial for sustainable travel, but many municipalities struggle to effectively identify maintenance needs. Unlike roads, data collection from the pedestrian and cycle network is often neglected, which can lead to inadequate maintenance and safety risks. Traditional methods of inspection are both time-consuming and costly.

Aims and objectives

The STIG (Smart Technology for Innovative Data Collection and Analysis for Pedestrian and Cycle Paths) project develops and tests an AI-based method for efficient data collection and analysis of pedestrian and cycle paths. By adapting existing technology for roads to pedestrian and cycle infrastructure, a cost-effective tool is created for municipalities to improve maintenance and safety.

Method

STIG is implemented in several steps:

  • Identification of need scenarios and infrastructural parameters together with participating municipalities
  • Development of AI algorithms for analysis of image data from pedestrian and cycle paths
  • Field tests with different data collection methods, including municipal employees, contractors and different vehicle types
  • Validation of data and analyses against established road standards
  • Development of guidelines for implementation and scaling up

Use of the results

The results from STIG will:

  • Give municipalities a tool for proactive and efficient maintenance of pedestrian and cycle paths
  • Enable faster identification and remediation of infrastructure problems
  • Contribute to increased safety for cyclists and pedestrians
  • Strengthen the attractiveness of active travel modes with environmental and health benefits as a result
