Robust and safe deployment of C-ITS
Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) is a technology that enables communication between vehicles and infrastructure. The aim of the project is to enable a robust and secure rollout of C-ITS in Sweden.
Background and current situation
Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) is a technology that enables communication between vehicles and infrastructure. This technology has been tested in several Swedish and European initiatives, including those financed by Drive Sweden, as well as within the European collaboration C-Roads. Despite this progress, a national vision and a robust strategy for broad implementation in Sweden are still missing. In order to launch C-ITS in a safe and resilient manner, a comprehensive approach to implementation, cybersecurity and validation methods is now required.
Aim and objectives
The aim of the project is to enable a robust and secure rollout of C-ITS in Sweden. The objectives include:
- Develop a national vision for C-ITS,
- Develop strategies, test scenarios and methods for validation of function and security,
- Strengthen implementation aspects such as cybersecurity and interoperability,
- Promote knowledge exchange between industry, academia, authorities and international actors.
Method
The work will be carried out in close collaboration between the public sector, industry, academia and international experts. The project begins with a needs analysis and external monitoring to map current solutions, standards and requirements. Workshops and interviews with key stakeholders will be carried out in parallel to collect experiences and needs. Test scenarios and validation methods will then be developed, which will be tested practically in AstaZero's advanced test environment. A special focus will be on cybersecurity, interoperability and the robustness of the technology under varying conditions. The project will also take into account societal and gender perspectives to identify the needs and conditions of different groups. Insights and recommendations will be documented throughout the process to support future implementation projects.
Use of results
The results from the project will form the basis for future decisions on how C-ITS should be introduced nationally. By developing practical guidelines, technical recommendations and clear requirements, the project can contribute to a more coordinated and efficient development. The Swedish Transport Administration will be able to use the results in its planning and investment in infrastructure, while technology suppliers will get a clear picture of expectations and requirements. The knowledge exchange and the established methods will also be valuable for other authorities, municipalities and private actors who want to participate in the rollout of C-ITS. The project's insights will be disseminated via reports, seminars and dialogue with industry and decision-makers.
