Background, problems and current situation

The purpose of a large part of the digitalization and AI development that is taking place in all sectors of society and industries is to enable data-driven operations, with more efficient resource utilization, better customer benefit and reduced environmental impact as a result. Access to data sources outside one's own operations has been identified as a central enabler for streamlining existing services as well as for innovation of new ecosystem-driven services. This is also highly applicable in the transport sector.

Many of DriveSweden's projects have already demonstrated the benefits of sharing data in ecosystems in several parts of the transport sector. At the same time, projects have pointed to difficulties in terms of legal aspects, business models, actor behaviors, data definitions, technical interfaces and cybersecurity when data sharing is to take place on a larger scale with more actors and for a greater impact of the benefits. Without eliminating these difficulties and obstacles, a broader delivery of the demonstrated potential benefits for users, companies and society at large is thus at risk.

The EU has also identified data sharing as a key enabler for the Union's innovation and competitiveness, across all industries and sectors of society. The EU Data Act (Data Regulation) clarifies that it is the user who owns the data generated by connected products and services, and defines the product manufacturer's obligations to provide requested data. The regulation must in a first step be complied with by market parties from 2025-09-12 and will in the next step be supplemented one year later with automated data sharing via sector-specific "Data Spaces". The regulation applies to both B2C and B2B and B2G value chains.

Purpose and objectives of the project

The purpose of Catalyst is to identify the most important recurring obstacles, based on Drive Sweden's completed innovation project's insights into the benefits of data sharing and obstacles to scaling up, and to demonstrate tools for how these obstacles can be demolished. The project will, for example, demonstrate the likely impact that the EU Data Act and related Data Spaces will have in removing these obstacles.

Method

Based on already concluded Drive Sweden projects, a series of workshops will be conducted around specific application areas, to identify possible solutions to the most important already demonstrated obstacles to functional data sharing.

How will the results be used

The results will be presented during 1-2 webinars to Drive Sweden's other members and possibly other relevant and interested ecosystems.
