New projects to provide sustainable mobility solutions for the whole of Sweden

Thursday, December 1, 2022

In Borlänge, Skellefteå and Karlstad, new mobility solutions are now being developed with the aim of better accessibility between town and countryside throughout Sweden. The new projects promote behavioral changes that can contribute to climate-smart and sustainable transport and mobility patterns for people and goods between, in rural areas close to urban areas.

In collaboration with the Strategic Innovation Programs Drive Sweden, focused on future sustainable mobility, and Viable Cities, focused on climate change, Vinnova now provides support for innovations that contribute to sustainable accessibility throughout Sweden. The call was held within the framework of Climate-Smart Mobility 2030.

In Borlänge, mobility services are to be developed adapted to commuting between the city center and the countryside. In Skellefteå, mobility hubs are to be developed for cold climates that integrate drone platforms and other modes of transport. In Karlstad, development is taking place so that municipal company cars can be replaced with transport services such as taxis or various forms of shared mobility.

More about the projects that receive support

Work commuting - behavioral change with digital support
The City of Borlänge, together with a number of partners - Sustainable Innovation, SSAB, IKEA, Borlänge Energi, and the KLOT climate psychologists - will develop mobility services adapted for commuting between the city center and the countryside. New knowledge about behavioral coins and digital carpooling services should contribute to increased sustainability and less climate impact in transport. The work is part of speeding up the transition to a climate-neutral Borlänge in 2030 and has significant potential for scale-up.

Planning for future-proof infrastructure at mobility hubs in cold climates
Together with Skellefteå Science City, the City of Skellefteå will develop future-proof mobility hubs that increase accessibility to local services and favor climate-smart travel behaviors and freight transport in cold climates with snowy winters. This builds on the test bed for electric flight, drone transport and electric helicopter (eVTOL) in northern Sweden that was established previously. The work is part of speeding up the transition to a climate-neutral Skellefteå in 2030 and has significant potential for scale-up.

Service shuttle
The municipality of Karlstad, together with the Swedish Taxi Association and the association Klimatkommunerna, will investigate the economic, environmental and social consequences of replacing municipal company cars with transport services such as taxis or various forms of shared mobility with high environmental performance. The work is part of speeding up the transition to a climate-neutral Karlstad in 2030 and has significant potential for scale-up.

More details about the projects will be posted under Climate-Smart Mobility's website later.

About Viable Cities
Viable Cities is a Strategic Innovation Program (SIP) focused on climate-neutral and sustainable cities. In the Climate Neutral Cities 2030 initiative and with the Climate Contract 2030 tool, the program collaborates with 23 cities and four authorities to speed up the climate transition. The program has approximately 130 member organizations from business, academia, civil society and public sector.

About Drive Sweden
