Preparing our cities for automated transport – workshop with inspiration from Hamburg

Automated transport is rapidly moving from vision to reality. At the same time, the role of municipalities will become increasingly important for how the technology is introduced and used in our cities.

How do we create the conditions for automation to contribute to increased road safety, reduced climate impact, and a more accessible transport system? What tools do municipalities already have today, which need to be developed, and how can municipalities, authorities, and the business sector work together to create the conditions for a successful introduction?

Through inspiration, joint discussions, and interactive workshop elements, we will explore possible ways forward and identify which policy instruments, tools, and forms of collaboration can contribute to the greatest possible societal benefit.

The results of the workshop will be used as input for the continued national work within the Transformation Map for automated transport.

Workshop objectives

• Create a shared vision of the municipality's future role in an automated transport system.
• Identify which tools municipalities have today and which may be needed in the future.
• Discuss how automated transport can contribute to the municipalities' own goals within mobility, climate, and urban development.
• Identify the need for collaboration between municipalities, the state, and the business sector.
• Develop an initial joint foundation for the role of municipalities in the automated transport system of the future.

Preliminary agenda

• Introduction and digital presentation by the City of Hamburg Welcome, purpose, and goals for the day, a brief current overview of developments, and inspiration from Dr Lea Decker from the City of Hamburg, who will talk about Hamburg's plans and the public-sector-driven implementation of autonomous services.
• Workshop 1 – Future vision 2040: Formulating the target scenario What will the transport system look like in 2040 if automated transport contributes to the greatest possible societal benefit? The groups will jointly develop a shared vision.
• Coffee break
• Workshop 2 – From the current situation to the vision: Designing the municipality's toolbox What tools does the municipality already have today? Which need to be developed? What requires national support? How do we take it step-by-step from the current situation to the 2040 vision?
• Reality check – From idea to reality The groups review their own proposals, identifying strengths, conflicting goals, and what is required to succeed.
• Joint feedback and prioritisation Presentation of the groups' most important conclusions and joint prioritisation of the most significant tools and measures.
• Summary and next steps Summary of the day's most important insights and how the results will be taken forward.
