Amazon Invests in Electric Delivery Vans

Amazon is planning to buy 100,000 electrical trucks from electric-truck start-up Rivian as a part of their pledge to move to 100% renewable energy use by 2030. [1]

The investment in Rivian worth $440 million, is the biggest order for electric commercial vehicles in the U.S. to date and is set to cut Amazon´s carbon emissions companywide.

CEO and founder Jeff Bezos have stated that placing an order of this magnitude for electrical vehicles will drive the economy to start building products and services that can enable large companies to meet their climate pledges.

Rivian have also stated that they have plans to build delivery vans for other companies than Amazon at this time. However, the production of Amazon’s fleet will not delay the release of their R1T electric pickups and R1S SUVs that start in late 2020.

Rivian will deliver the first unit by 2021 plan is to have the first 10,000 vans on the road by 2022 with the remainder added by 2030.

Personal comments

Having more delivery vehicles be electric is a huge step towards transforming the whole transportation network into a more sustainable one. By placing this order for electrical vans as part of their logistics, Amazon is leading the way to show other large companies both the positive financial and environmental impact this could bring.
